BUTTERFLY DAYS

Richard Stewart

Although this is essentially a selection from the author’s butterfly diaries between 1994 and 1999, covering the whole of the national Millennium Butterfly Survey, it is also wide-ranging in its scope. Richard covers many trips outside Suffolk, including to Devon for Large Blues, the Scottish Highlands for Chequered Skippers and to places like the Isle of Wight, Dorset and the Lake District which still have a range of butterfly species no longer recorded in Suffolk.
There is a memorable encounter with overwintering Monarchs in Mexico and the author’s adventures en route include a nudist colony, abandoned villages and allotments, suspicious villagers, late night football supporters, indulgent meals, a computerised robot and a woman who actually dislikes butterflies.
Richard Stewart was Suffolk Butterfly Recorder from 1994 to 2002 and his photos, poems and articles have been published in over 200 titles ranging from Peace News to The Lady. These include well-known magazines such as The Countryman, RSPB Birds, Heritage, Home and Country and This England. He writes a monthly article for two magazines and contributes regularly to many others.
Several of his poems are included in the text and Richard’s poetry has appeared in many magazines and anthologies, including both the Norfolk and Suffolk editions of The Poet's England. Two poetry collections, Remembrance and Green Man have been published and the hardback, full colour Millennium Atlas of Suffolk Butterflies.
